Java Meets SQL: Bridging Applications and Database
Event Coverage Article

On October 22, 2025, La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) hosted the workshop Java Meets SQL, a workshop meant to ease students towards the integration of two different technologies: the programming language Java, and the relational database MySQL.
This was hosted by Mr. Pierre Vincent Hernandez, an Associate Consultant at Oracle as well as an alumnus of LSCS.
This catered towards students currently taking the course Information Management, which gives students an introduction to relational databases. This workshop was, in fact, requested by one of the faculty members, Ms. Estefanie Bertumen, aimed to “close a gap” in the curriculum, as the course itself does not teach how to integrate between the application and the database-a crucial skill required in one of its major course outputs.
Given the nature of the course, one major challenge was finding an appropriate speaker, as “few developers still actively use Java GUI for database-integrated applications,” remarked one of the project heads, Vice President of Academics Chynna Mae Tria.
She also noted that one area for improvement was the time allocation, as the talk proper ended up feeling “rushed” due to lack of time.
Overall, this workshop proved to be a success, both in terms of participant count and objectives, and marks a continued commitment of LSCS towards the academic needs of its home college.
